Teens in Developed Nations Facing Mental Health Challenges

Study Reveals Increasing Prevalence of Mental Health Issues Among Teenagers

Findings from Pew Research Center and Author Jonathan Haidt

A recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center has shed light on the concerning mental health challenges faced by teenagers in high-income countries. The study found that nearly three-quarters of teens surveyed reported feeling happy or peaceful, indicating a significant decline compared to previous generations.

According to author Jonathan Haidt, this trend is linked to the rise in problematic smartphone use among teens. The study revealed that 18.7% of 16-18 year-olds engage in problematic smartphone use, which has been associated with increased feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety.

Parents are also expressing concerns about the negative impact of smartphones on their children's mental health. Many parents worry that excessive screen time leads to decreased physical activity, disrupted sleep patterns, and social isolation, all contributing factors to mental health issues.
